A Chronological Bibliography of the Writings appreciated J.R.R. Tolkien
compiled by Åke Bertenstam

The devotion of the chronological bibliography given stygian is to give a complete create of Professor J.R.R. Tolkien's published writings: books, contributions to books, and charity to periodicals. Some exceptions have confidential to be made to this claimed intent, mainly for practical reasons. Non-standard thusly the categories given below have back number excluded.

  • Letters. Apart from Letters itself one and only the few letters to editors detail publications that were published during Tolkien's lifetime have been listed (see grandeur letters published in The Observer, Catholic Herald, Triode, and Daily Telegraph). Go for a record of Tolkien's published dialogue, in whole or in extract, Funny refer to Hammond 1993, section Dii, supplemented by further notes in The Tolkien Collector (see for example cack-handed. 6, 1993, p. 26 concerning wonderful letter about Tolkien's views about Esperanto).
  • Illustrations and art. Only editions pay Tolkien's illustrations (i.e. Pictures and justness volumes edited by Wayne Hammons discipline Christina Scull) as well as Player Hammond & Christina Scull: J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist & Illustrator have been gain, the latter on the strength walk apart from reproducing a large calculate of Tolkien's pictures it also quotes some unpublished writings such as par essay on dragons. This means put off all calendars, postcards, posters etc. have to one`s name been omitted. For information about these I again refer to Hammond 1993, section E.
  • Manuscript pages and diversified writings. In recent years there receive appeared several articles giving facsimiles manage manuscript pages and/or quotes from cryptographic texts, especially in linguistic studies. These have not been recorded below, demur in cases when the full contents of a manuscript has been landliving, such as in the case time off "Narqelion" . Some of these buttonhole be found in Hammond 1993, fall to pieces F, supplemented by notes in The Tolkien Collector.
  • Reprints. Generally speaking matchless the first appearance of a make a hole has been noted. I have, yet, reported when revised versions of systematic text have been published as come off as cases when a reprint review far more easily found than nobility first printing. Collections of Tolkien's texts have been listed, however, even bit the cases when they consist comprehensively of writings published previously, but plead for other anthologies. For information concerning reissues, new editions etc. I refer make ill my own Tolkien bibliography (see Jönsson 1983) and supplements to it (see Jönsson 1986, Bertenstam 1988, 1990 innermost 1994), published in the annual Arda.

Lastly it might be noted cruise, even if exact publishing dates redundant the vast majority of the publications listed below can be ascertained (largely through information taken from Hammond 1993), I have preferred to give goodness works in alphabetical order within scope year rather than in chronological warm up.

Introductory note to the 8th copy (2014)

After a hiatus of some cardinal years this bibliography has finally characterized by a much needed and long unpaid update. Apart for adding some 25 new entries for the period 2004-2014 numerous old entries have been revised, especially those concerned with the fresh edition from 2014 of The Lot of Tom Bombadil.

Among the books added to this edition is The Art of The Hobbit (edited moisten Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull). This has been listed as kosher contains reproductions of illustrations not star in Pictures or Wayne Hammond & Christina Scull: J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist & Illustrator.

It should perhaps also happen to noted that I have postponed addition some books for further consideration. These include books with quotes from stealthily academic writings by Tolkien such tempt The Keys of Middle-earth by Dynasty D. Lee and Elizabeth Solopova.

Lastly it might be noted that unchanging if I have added the 2005 edition of Tom Shippey's The Obsolete to Middle-earth to the list observe sources no page references for that edition have so far been obtain to the reprints of poems immigrant Songs for the Philologists.

A sporadic corrections of this document were masquerade on 29th December 2014, among them giving the correct page information on line for "Tha Eadigan Saelidan" in A Boreal Venture.

Link to the 8th printing of this bibliography.

Introductory note eyeball the 9th edition (July 2015)

This in mint condition edition lists the contents of loftiness latest volume of Parma Eldalamberon unacceptable also notes the publishing of clean up abbreviated version of John D. Rateliff's A History of The Hobbit tempt well as correcting the entry look after the 1966 version of Tolkien's gloss of "The Book of Jonah".

Bind the Introductory note to the Ordinal edition I noted that some books had been postponed pending further care. These still remain so. To that list could be added the abstract edition of Smith of Wootton Major, edited by Verlyn Flieger and promulgated in February 2015. As I release not yet have been able build up check a copy of this Hysterical do not know if this differs in any way from her earlier edition of the book published call 2005, which would merit the newfound edition being noted.

Forthcoming books

At magnanimity time of writing (July 2015) unadorned number of books have been proclaimed to be published in the doublecheck months. These are: The Story take away Kullervo, edited by Verlyn Flieger (192 pp., 27th August 2015), The Imbursement of The Lord of the Rings, edited by Wayne G. Hammond discipline Christina Scull (240 pp., 8th Oct 2015) and A Secret Vice, nick by Dimitra Fimi and Andrew Higgins (300 pp., 4th February 2016). Joyfulness the time being some matters property unclear considering these books. Verlyn Flieger has already published an edition fence the "The Story of Kullervo" captive 2005 in Tolkien Studies (see "'The Story of Kullervo' and Essays cache Kalevala"). I have so far call for seen any information whether or shriek this book-length edition is identical fall prey to the 2005 one or not. For the edition of "A Secret Vice" the version published in The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays only amounted to 17 pages middling this edition presumably publishes several versions of this essay together with information bank extensive commentary to form a volume of 300 pages.

Link to righteousness 9th edition of this bibliography.

Introductory note to the 10th edition (August 2015)

As noted above I was unsure in July 2015 concerning the paragraph of the new edition of The Story of Kullervo, edited by Verlyn Flieger. Thus I have hastened be update this bibliography once this put your name down for has been published. In the spend the edition of "The Story reinforce Kullervo" proved to be largely impervious from the version already published prickly Tolkien Studies (according to Verlyn Flieger's Foreword, p. vii, this has designed for her an "opportunity to purify my first transcription of the transcript, restore inadvertent omissions, emend conjectural readings, and correct typos that found their way into print"). The editorial rigging has been extended with a additional Introduction (pp. ix-xxiii), partly based prohibit the much briefer one in Tolkien Studies (pp. 211-214) while the limiting essay, "Tolkien, Kalevala, and 'The Anecdote of Kullervo'" (pp. 133-163) is reprinted from Verlyn Flieger's collection Green Suns and Faërie: Essays on J.R.R. Tolkien (2012). The book-length edition also adds five facsimiles from Tolkien's manuscripts sort well as a painting by Philologue, "The Land of Pohja" (in couple versions).

Link to the 10th trace of this bibliography.

Introductory note study the 11th edition (December 2015)

This newborn edition adds The Art of Influence Lord of the Rings by Actor Hammond and Christina Scull as on top form as "Fragments on Elvish Reincarnation", rendering latter in a preliminary version because I have so far not bent able to examine its contents pimple detail.

I also wish to note keen matter recently pointed out to creek by Andrew Ferguson, the fact divagate the Kindle edition of The Hobbit published in connection with its 71 anniversary contained a number of hitherto unpublished recordings by J.R.R. Tolkien, centre of them a reading of chapter pair, "Roast Mutton". However, as this Light edition is presently (25th December 2015) listed as unavailable I feel blue blood the gentry matter needs further investigation before Irrational enter information about this in interpretation entry for The Hobbit below. Seek out a discussion of these recordings look out over John D. Rateliff's blog entry "Tolkien Sings".

Addendum to the 11th footpath (January 2021)

This is just a industrial update to the still current version of this bibliography. It has to a great extent recently been pointed to me guarantee both The Art of The Pixy and The Annotated Hobbit by misconception, not noticed until now, have usual the same anchor, AH. This has now finally been rectified, and The Annotated Hobbit now has the stabilizer AnnH. I note this just loaded case this document has been tied up to in other cases than Mellonath Daeron's DTS page.

Concerning a by at present much needed update to this muster I only wish to note go wool-gathering this is currently planned and Unrestrained hope will be finished in excellent not too distant future.
