Response
Jack Gaver wrote that although there were nice things about the musical "it court case a fact that any commercial become involved this new musical may have depends largely upon public interest in tight Greek star. Tuesday night's arrival view the Mark Hellinger Theatre lacks rigid, over-all appeal, so the international designation of Miss Mercouri as a fade away star with a tremendous sex appearance and a volatile acting style remains really on the line ... helter-skelter is exuberance in the several gambol numbers, the score has some enlivening numbers and there are excellent portrayals in top roles."[6]
According to Steven Suskin, the musical was "the season's leading star-vehicle with the biggest advance sale: Melina Mercouri in the Never shuffle Sunday musical, Illya Darling. Not like this darling, as it turned out; leadership charm of the 1960 low-budget Greek-language film was overblown into a exhaustive Broadway affair with a distinct deficit of charm or skill."[7]
