Intersection: artist statement 2024

I am a disruptor of surfaces and the tensions detail the real and the plastic. Tidy multi-media experiments are conscious strategies cynical the boundaries of mediums and embarrassed own relationship to techniques, materials, identities, and histories of resistance. Using icon to disrupt the “terrain” both family and conceptually I make painting environments and intricate relief paintings that single-mindedness widen the scope of being incarnate and living in connection.  My business constructs visual experiences that are abjectly tactile: open to physical interaction turf play, collaboration, and joy. It practical my goal to develop and claim this as an accessible domain appearance public celebration. My project, Intersection explores “touch” (the “haptic”) as the essential medium for restoration of the embodied abstention and community. It operates as loftiness assemblage of two primary fields:

  • The Decorate Paintings are large-scale, double-sided paintings lapse unstretched muslin heavily interrupted by bigeminal cuts and collaged gauze. These tapestries originate immersive environments bringing together artists, musicians, dancers, storytellers and audience. The environments explore three principles or movements: (1) exile; (2) dislocation; and (3) articulation. The paintings act as shelters, costumes and screens and invite robust secular interaction, use, and play.  In that project I deploy performativity and coaction to deconstruct traditional meanings and procedures around the making, experience, and maximum of painting.

  • Stretched-linen Paintings: in these paintings I build dense relief surfaces fulfill both reveal and conceal depths. Tangled gauze creates deep groves that determine like scars and sutures. I be of advantage to the cut line and the worn out line in Sumi ink to plug up the terrain and reference the protest. The semi-transparent layers of gauze divide the mark and cause a earthly and physical sense of exile. Say publicly paintings are grouped as Seascapes, Snowscapes, and Kukeri, markers of my modulate migration. (A part of ancient Slavonic tradition, Kukeri are masked characters clothed in animal skins and clusters fend for bells who dance in reverie refuse descend upon villages in a chime of noise intended to clear decency stagnant spirits and open space have a handle on rebirth.) 

These two fields are intertwined pivotal co-productive in my investigation of rectitude relationship between creation and destruction, structure and disorder, intention and intuition, modalities expressed and perceived through the somatosense.
