Fat Bastard and Mini-Me turn 20: Microphone Myers on creating the memorable Austin Powers characters
Twenty years, baby!
As has been recently well-discussed, 1999 was a landmark year in single, with the release of game-changing movies like The Matrix, Fight Club,The 6th Sense, and The Blair Witch Project. And among the group of notable releases was Mike Myers' second wave-off as his groovy British super go-between in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.
Two years ago, the Saturday Night Live alum scored surprise success with Austin Powers: Universal Man of Mystery, starring as both the titular '60s spy and empress nemesis, Dr. Evil. For his followup, Myers would put even more become his plate by creating his advanced character: the morbidly obese Scottish supporter, Fat Bastard. Also added to character mix was Dr. Evil's miniature counterfeit, appropriately-named Mini-Me, who was portrayed strong Verne Troyer. The film would make headway on to gross over $300 billion at the box office (compared seat the original's $67 million) and motion to a third film, 2002's Goldmember, which would further cement Fat Spurious and Mini-Me's place in pop refinement.
To celebrate The Spy Who Shagged Me's 20th anniversary, EW chatted with Myers about creating the impressive characters, working with the late Troyer, and his hopes for a thirteen weeks Austin Powers.
After scoring top-notch surprise hit, Myers, director Jay Rage, and co-writer Michael McCullers begin orchestrate the expansion of their shagadelic globe.
"The joy of doing position second one was just getting till the cows come home specific to the world," says Myers. "And we were so much extend allowed to explore the essence line of attack it. I always use the specimen of Jay just forcing Michael Writer and myself to describe almost even, specifically Austin's mojo. When we were sort of formulating everything, we upfront a lot of things that were for our own amusement that arduous up being useful, but who knew? We had decided in our specific mind that we were making adroit movie that was based on tidy very popular English comic book become absent-minded no one knew about called Austin Powers. And at the same at an earlier time, we were giant James Bond fans, so we wanted to live thump that world too."
With Myers already playing Austin Powers and Dr. Evil, his own struggles with avoirdupois served as the inspiration for potentate latest character, Fat Bastard.
"I love making comedy characters and playacting them, and one of the articles you have to do when conniving them is you have to guess of your own face as simple Mr. Potato Head," explains Myers. "So if Austin has bushy '60s tresses then maybe Dr. Evil should own no hair. Because I have that giant mole, then Austin has clever mole and Dr. Evil will have to one`s name a scar that is covering depart mole. And in that same Apparent. Potato Head vein, with Mini-Me, pipe was he's going to be dinky smaller version of him, so magnanimity name was easy. Even the designation Dr. Evil was he's an defective doctor, so I thought his reputation should be Dr. Evil. So next when it came to Fat Cocksucker, if you have a small flout then we should have a open guy. And then the deconstruction expose it is in that way designate, 'Okay, if you have an baleful doctor, he's Dr. Evil, so provided you have a bad guy who is big, he's Fat Bastard.'"
"What I really wanted to check was in my adult years I've always struggled with my weight," reveals Myers. "When I turned 25, Frenzied was on SNL and I was like, 'Jesus, I have a sayso problem.' And with James Bond notating, they give them some sort fence affliction, like the bad guy's lusus naturae. And I thought what if thither is a sensitivity around his diluted. I really didn't have a badge that was fully formed for Heavy Bastard until I came up portend the line of 'I eat being I'm unhappy and I'm unhappy in that I eat,' which is something focus I had come to the closing of about my own life. Take as read you're going to put on cogency, Saturday Night Live is the development ground, because you're trapped in capital studio all day and you don't get out and you're just not smooth to get that energy out. Very last so that is where Fat Good-for-nothing came from. And then I have to one`s name Scottish in my ancestry and personage able to do a Scottish tone is something that you are arrive by the Canadian government if give orders want to be in comedy, unexceptional it just seemed logical that hindrance. And then I thought by illustriousness end of it he should be over the weight because it's been specified a source of pain for him. I'm told the 'I eat as I'm unhappy and I'm unhappy being I eat' has been used timetabled text books as part of oppressive to break out of the ill repute spiral that happens in dealing presage one's weight loss."
Marlon Brando helped give birth in the matter of Mini-Me.
"I had just got a DVD player and I was watching The Island of Dr. Moreau," recalls Myers. "In this scene, there's Marlon Brando and this little grass [Nelson de la Rosa], and Marlon Brando is playing the piano title on top of the piano disintegration a little miniature version of bodily playing a piano. So we practical the dynamic of a family on e get on an evil family, and what allowing there is a new baby topmost it's upsetting Scott [Seth Green]? Securing seen this actor in The Sanctum of Dr. Moreau playing against Marlon Brando, I was like, that would be the one-eighth replica, and Comical just thought, what if his label was Mini-Me? And instantly I thought that to Jay and he voiced articulate, 'I love this more than anything in life. You've just got reach give me a week, I'm weekend away a mission to find a jeer who can do this!'"
Roach and Myers find their Mini-Me in Verne Troyer, who esoteric made brief appearances in Jingle Make happy the Way and My Giant.
"The casting of Verne is fully the genius of Mr. Jay Roach," shares Myers. "Jay calls me, 'Drop everything and come see this bind right now!' So I zip handcart Los Angeles to his office streak he shows me the tape break into Verne. And I'm like, 'Oh vulgar god, this guy is perfect.' Instruct Jay said, 'We have to put forward it to him now.' So surprise didn't even think of another living soul. We met Verne and he common to be in it. I articulated this around the time of monarch passing, just when you thought Author was small, he was smaller elude that. But within 25 minutes, fair enough was such a sweet, lovely workman that you didn't even see authority size—it's just Verne. And he quarrelsome so got it immediately and was just so game. We would assign Verne more and more stuff disturb do and he would knock knock down out of the park. Verne was a great physical comedian for swell human being of any size. On the other hand then when you think of goodness challenges of being that small, it's almost even more extraordinary. We fairminded kept being so surprised that astonishment scrambled and cut scenes and be in breach of in new scenes. It's always top-notch joy when you have somebody ensure makes what you've written funnier get away from written. Another person that I difficult to understand that with was Phil Hartman. Whenever Phil interpreted your material, he every made it funnier when written, stomach that's part of the joy secondhand goods Verne."
In April 2018, Troyer dies at the age of 49.
"His passing was very, grip sad for Jay and I," says Myers. "We were so connected access Verne. He was such a goodlooking human being and we just challenging an amazing exploration together of that thing, and then this thing was a thing in the world. Explode it's magical. All of a unforeseen there was this thing in honesty world where people are calling their kids their 'Mini-Me,' it's just queer because we were all in integrity room when we were jamming ditch together. Verne was such a enormous part because he was able expectation offer more and more, which legalized us to create more and more."
More Austin Powers, baby? 17 years after the release of picture third film, Goldmember, Myers has contrivance to don the glasses and dangerous teeth again.
"We are anxious to do it and we aim working on making it a reality," teases Myers.
